History

The firm started in 1983 as an insolvency practice and developed into general practice in 1985 when the two present owners and directors, Michael Sinfield and Peter Hellawell, joined the practice.  Peter and Mike became partners in 1986 and the practice moved into the present premises at Harvestway House, 28 High Street, Witney, in December 1987.  The premises were officially opened by Douglas Hurd, the then Foreign Secretary in Margaret Thatcher’s government, on 7 April 1988.

In 1992 the insolvency practice was sold and at the same time, the Witney office of Kidsons Impey, merged with the firm and we commenced trading under the name of Petersons.  By 1997, Mike and Peter had built a general practice which comprised a lot of owner-managed businesses for which we were providing compliance services and tax planning services, but we felt that there must be more that we could offer clients than this.  So started the training process with first attendance at the Accountant’s Boot Camp and the acquisition of substantial resources to enable the firm to really begin to help clients move from doing the thing they were trained for, to starting to look at being effective businesses in their own right.  Businesses that ran whether the business owner was there or not.

The Accountant’s Boot Camp processes got us off to a good start but we became frustrated with the highly academic nature of the resources that we now had and the inability to ground these especially for the smaller, family-owned business.  In 2001 we became founder members of AVN and this has now enabled us to have tools to systemise clients’ businesses, to compare year on year results, to benchmark effectively our clients against clients of their own size, to introduce the board view and one-page plan processes to clients and much, much more.  In recent years our membership of AVN has opened up new possibilities for our clients in the form of access to high level tax planning strategies which we have introduced to appropriate clients when they have opportunities for which these are suitable.

As a firm we try to ensure that we keep close to the latest technology and systems to ensure that we can provide high quality compliance services and state of the art business and tax planning.  There is an interesting, rewarding and exciting future ahead
